Understand
the whole bike.
A motorcycle is a system. Intake, fuel, jetting, exhaust, engine setup and how the bike is actually ridden all affect one another. The goal isn't to randomly bolt parts on. It's to understand why the machine behaves the way it does and make the entire package work together.
